Rochester, New York, September 1, 2007 -- Star United placed first in the mini corps category of Drum Corps Associates' (DCA) Individual & Ensemble competition held in Rochester, New York on late Friday evening, August 31.

Star United performed last and began their program just before midnight in front of a crowd estimated at 2,000 people at Rochester's Riverside Convention Center.

The unit performed three pieces including Skylines, an original composition by Frank Sullivan. Jim Prime, Jr.’s arrangement of Percy Grainger’s Horkstow Grange served as the middle piece. The Star United hornline had the rare privilege of performing Horkstow Grange for Jim Prime, Jr. outside the convention center immediately prior to their performance. This arrangement was created for Star of Indiana, but never used in competition.

Star United completed their program with Michael Klesch’s arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide as performed by the 1985 Garfield Cadets.

Following a performance of a unified hornline consisting of the 18 competing mini corps, a brief awards ceremony revealed Star United as the evening’s victors and recipients of the Donna Ernst Memorial Trophy.

Due to a heartfelt plea from one of the event coordinators, a victory concert in the convention center was not attempted. However, the convention center’s loading dock served admirably as an impromptu victory concert venue. Dozens assembled to witness the performance of the competitive show plus Larry Kerchner’s arrangement of When You Wish.

Special congratulations to the members and leadership of Star United in maintaining the rich traditions of the Star organization.
